Toxic Foods

Most of us cannot resist those pleading eyes asking for a little tit-bit. Whilst it is acceptable to give your dog the occasional treat, you must not overdo them because of the risk of obesity. Sweet and sugary food will also rot your dog's teeth much in the same way as your own. There are however, some foods which are toxic to dogs:

• Onions

• Raisins and sultanas

• Grapes

• Chocolate

• Any food, sweets or chewing gum containing the artificial sweetener Xylitol

• Avocado

• Macadamia nuts

• Fruit pits and seeds

Be careful with dairy products - small amounts of yogurt and cheese are ok but cow's milk will cause diarrhoea. Semi-skimmed goat's milk is fine for young puppies but older dogs do not need to drink milk.

An ingredient increasing found in human food is Xylitol. This is extremely toxic to dogs. Further information can be found on the page titled 'Are we poisoning our dogs?'
