Grooming
If you are going to show your Lakie, you will need to learn how to hand strip the coat and your breeder will be able to advise on this. Joining the Midland Lakeland Terrier Club will give you access to friendly members who will be very happy to help and give you tips on grooming for the show ring.
Even if you do not wish to show your puppy, a daily brushing on a grooming table or other suitable surface will be needed if your puppy is to get used to standing still for grooming. Of course, you must make sure the pup is safe and cannot fall off. A table with a grooming arm to keep the pup still is the best option.
During grooming sessions, your dog will learn to trust you and accept all that needs to be done to keep him or her clean and healthy.
• Gently examine eyes, ears and teeth.
• Start at the head and gently comb around mouth, neck and ears, working your way down his body.
• Tidy around paws and trim nails if necessary. Don’t forget to trim dew claws on front legs if your pup has them.
• Trim carefully around anus to prevent coat becoming dirty and matted with dried faeces.
Keep the grooming sessions short until the pup is used to standing still. Be firm but gentle and end each session with a treat.
Teeth cleaning – you can, if you wish, buy a special toothbrush and dog toothpaste from pet stores. However, if you feed your dog a raw diet which includes raw, meaty bones, this will usually be unnecessary.
It is a good idea to bathe your pup occasionally, not because he is dirty but because it is easier to teach a small, clean puppy to accept a bath than wait until he is big and dirty!!
